Durpin

FEATURES

Finding friends

Your contacts, your friend link, search by @username, and inviting people who aren't on Durpin.

Since build 7

Adding a friend and inviting someone are two different things now:

Both are on the Friends tab (since build 15; until then People, opened from the add friend button at the top of Home). At its top, under search, the Instants card says who has one waiting for you ("From Maya and Evan", or "Nothing waiting") and has Send one; tap the card for your Instants. (Until build 15 they were behind the paper plane on Home.)

Your friends

The Friends tab ends with your friends as a list, A to Z, each with their photo, name and @username: the first 8, then See all 42 friends, which opens Your friends with all of them and a field to filter by name (build 15; until then they were faces, three across, and the add buttons came after all of them, further down as the list grew). Tap someone for their profile; press and hold to remove them, after "Remove Maya from friends?".

Above the list, so they never move down: Contacts, Link and QR code side by side, Invite someone new under them, and up to three People you may know.

Find friends in your contacts

Tap Find friends in your contacts, then Check my contacts. Your phone asks once for access to your contacts.

Durpin then checks the email addresses and phone numbers in your contacts against the email each person signed in with and, since build 14, the number they added. Only a scrambled copy (a hash) of each address and number leaves your phone; names never do, and the server keeps none of them. You see two lists:

People you could add from that check also join People you may know (below) for two weeks after you checked (build 10), or until you sign out, so someone else signing in on your phone doesn't get yours. Only their Durpin name and photo are kept on your phone, never anything from your contacts, and your contacts are read only when you tap Check my contacts; the Friends tab never reads them on its own.

Someone who signed in with Apple's Hide My Email can't be found by email, only by a number they added. Your friend link or their @username works too.

Your number

Since build 14 you can add your phone number, so friends who have it in their contacts find you, even when they don't have your email. Find friends shows Add your number until you do; it's also in Settings, Privacy, Your number. Type it the way you'd dial it; a number from another country needs its country code. Durpin keeps only a scrambled copy and its last two digits, so the screen can say "Your number ends in 42", with Change it and Remove it. It's deleted with your account.

Since build 15 Durpin also asks. If you haven't added a number, Add your number comes up when you open the app, with the same field. It waits until you've answered the phone's camera and notification prompts, and it only comes up on one of the main tabs, never over a photo or the Darkroom. Save adds your number, and it doesn't ask again (nor after you remove your number on Your number). Not now puts it off for 7 days, and after 3 Not nows it stops asking. You can still add it any time from Find friends, or Settings, Privacy, Your number.

There's no text message check yet, so a number isn't proof: if two accounts add the same number, someone with it in their contacts sees both.

Don't want to be found at all? Settings, Privacy, turn off Friends can find me from their contacts (it was "by email" until build 14). That hides you by email and by number.

People you may know

Friends of your friends, and the people from your contacts check, in one list with each person once (build 12). The ones with the most friends in common come first; being in your contacts counts as one more. Each row says why: "Friends with Sam and 2 more", "Friends with Sam" or "In your contacts".

Tap Add to send a request, or the x to stop suggesting someone. That holds on every phone you use, and search still finds them. Your friends, anyone with a request between you, anyone either of you blocked, and anyone who turned off being found (for the contacts part) never show.

Share your friend link sends durpin.app/f/... (since build 19; durpin.us/f/... before, and those still work). Anyone on Durpin who opens it becomes your friend straight away, so share it with people you know. It never lets anyone join Durpin; for that, send an invite.

Next to each other? Show your QR code shows the same link as a QR code: they point their camera at it and open it (build 10).

Shared it somewhere you shouldn't have? Long press Share your friend link and reset it. The old link stops working; friends you already have stay.

Type part of a name or username to find friends of your friends. Type someone's exact @username to find them anywhere on Durpin.

Since build 15 you can also type someone's whole phone number, the way you'd dial it. If they've added it to Durpin, they show first, with "Has that number" and Add. It's checked like one number from your contacts: only a scrambled copy is sent and it counts toward the same daily limit. A friend's number shows them too, as "Your friend, has that number". If nobody has added it, Search says so; they may still be on Durpin without it.

Requests

You can ask anyone you find, up to 100 requests a day. Declining is silent, and blocking still hides you both from each other everywhere.

Sent one by mistake? Tap Requested (in Search, Find friends or on their profile) and Take back: it comes off their requests, and they aren't told (build 15). One they declined in the last 30 days stays as it was, so asking again still waits, and you still aren't told they declined. Once you take one back, you can't ask them again for 24 hours, and it still counts toward your 100 a day. They can still ask you. Blocking and unblocking someone doesn't reset any of this, nor the 30 days after a decline. Ask again too soon and Durpin says "You took back a request to them. You can ask again tomorrow." (build 16).

A request that comes in while you're on another tab shows when you come back to Friends, without pulling to refresh (build 15).
