Light and dark
The Appearance setting (System, Light, Dark) and the screens that stay dark.
Since build 7
Durpin comes in two looks. Dark is the darkroom: warm near black, one orange light. Light is the same prints laid out on paper: a cream ground, dark ink, the same orange for anything you can act on.
Choosing one
Open Settings (the gear on the You tab). The first group, Appearance, has three choices:
- System, the default: Durpin follows your phone. Switch the phone between light and dark and Durpin changes with it.
- Light: always light.
- Dark: always dark.
The change happens at once, on every screen, with no restart. The choice is kept on this phone, so a second phone has its own.
A wide photo on a feed card sits whole on the card's own color, dark in dark mode and light in light mode (build 15; before, its blurred colors filled the space above and below it).
What stays dark
Some screens are dark whatever you pick, the way the phone's own camera and photo viewer are. Photos read best on a dark ground, and the darkroom should look like one.
- The camera, and the tab bar while you are on it
- The darkroom
- Turning over your shots (the reveal)
- The photo viewer, and comments opened from it
- The instant camera, and opening an Instant someone sent you
- Recaps
Everything else follows your choice: Home, You, Settings, profiles, the Instants list, shared rolls, Selects, Recently deleted and sign in.
The note under the Appearance choices says "The camera and the photo viewer stay dark." With System on, it starts with "Follows your phone."
The parts the phone draws
The status bar, the clock and battery at the top, turns light on dark screens and dark on light ones, including the screens that always stay dark.
On iPhone, the controls the system draws itself follow Durpin's choice rather than the phone's: switches, alerts, the share sheet and the keyboard. Pick Light on a phone set to dark and those are light too. The keyboard also matches the screen it opens on, so typing a comment in the photo viewer brings up a dark keyboard even in Light. On iPhone the glass behind the tab bar and the camera's floating buttons is tinted to match as well.
