Likes, comments and the stories viewer
The heart, "Liked by", comment previews, the comments sheet and the stories style viewer.
Since build 7
Like a shot
- Tap the heart under a friend's shot. It fills in; tap it again to take the like back.
- Or, on a feed card, double tap the photo. A heart pops on it. Double tap only likes; it never takes a like back. In the viewer a tap moves between shots, so like there with the heart.
- Hold the heart (or a feed card's photo) for the other vibes, or "+" at the end of them for any emoji (build 15, the same sheet as on comments: see Comments). You get one reaction per shot: the heart or one of the others. If you picked another one, its emoji shows where the heart was. Hearts, reactions and comments together go up to 60 a minute; past that Durpin says "That's a lot at once. Wait a minute and try again." (build 16, before that a code).
Your own shots have no heart: you can't like your own shot. Their "Liked by" line and comments show as on anyone's (see Your week).
See who liked it
Under each shot: up to three faces, the emoji they sent, and a line like "Liked by Sadiksha and Safal". You come first, as "you". Up to three names show; with four or more it reads "Liked by you, Sadiksha and others". "Liked by" is only for hearts: once any reaction is another emoji (build 16), the line after the emoji is just who, "You and Safal". There is never a number. Tap the line to see everyone and what they sent, and tap a name to open their profile. The shot's owner and their friends both see it.
Comments
The newest two comments show under each shot. When there are more, "View all 5 comments" opens the rest. A comment with a photo or GIF (build 15) shows its caption there, or just "GIF" or "Photo"; the picture itself is in the sheet. Reactions on comments, replies and pictures on comments have their own page: Comments, reactions on comments and replies. A comment, a reply or a reaction on your comment in Activity opens the shot with this sheet already up (build 10).
In the comments sheet:
- hold a comment for reactions, Reply, Copy, Delete and Report (see Comments);
- drag the grabber or the title down to close it;
- or tap the photo above it, the Android back button, or the X;
- scrolling the list drops the keyboard.
The viewer, stories style
Opened from the Home feed, the viewer works like stories, one page for each person's day, in feed order. What it plays depends on the shot you tap (build 13):
- A new shot: catch up. Only the new shots play: that person's, then everyone else's who has new ones, down the feed and then the cards above the one you tapped. Shots you've seen are skipped. After the last one: You're all caught up, with the faces you just saw. If you swiped past someone, it says who is still new instead, and a tap on the left goes back.
- A shot you've seen: that day. Everyone's shots from that day, in feed order, from the one you tapped. After the last: That's everyone from Saturday, with The day before to go on, so going further back is your choice.
- What it plays is decided when it opens: shots count as seen as you watch, but nobody drops out of the set while you're in it, and new shots that arrive meanwhile wait for the feed. A shot you only glanced at on its card still counts as new.
- Tap the right of the photo for the next shot, the left third for the one before. Past someone's last shot a tap goes on to the next person, with the same slide as a swipe; past their first shot it goes back to the person before, on the shot you left them on. At the very first shot the photo gives a little nudge and a light tick; past the very last comes the end card, where a tap on the left goes back and a tap anywhere else closes the viewer. The shots either side are already loaded, so a tap swaps at once, and a quick tap while the next person slides in counts for them. Since build 19 a tap counts only in the photo's room, between the header and the words under it (black space beside or above the photo included): a tap beside "Liked by", between the lines under the photo, under its buttons or on the header's empty parts does nothing. Before, those changed the shot. On the end card a swipe is not a tap: since build 19 a swipe sideways leaves the card up (before, a swipe back that lifted on the right closed the viewer), and a swipe down closes the viewer, as on every shot.
- Swipe left for the next person, right for the one before, within the same set: the quick way past someone. A person opens on their first new shot (see New shots first), and going back to someone returns you to the shot you were on.
- Press and hold the photo to see it on the whole screen: the name, the words and the buttons step aside and the photo grows to fill the screen; let go and they come back. Holding a clip also stops it where it is, and it plays on from there when you let go. Moving the finger, a second finger, or sliding on to the next person lets go too. Since build 18 the hold never stays after the finger is gone (twice on an Android emulator in build 17, quick taps left the photo filling the screen until the next touch).
- Swipe down on any shot to close the viewer. Swiping up does nothing.
- Pinch to zoom, a photo or a clip (a clip keeps playing). While a shot is zoomed in, a drag moves it, and taps and swipes wait until you zoom back out.
Photos and clips take the same touches, so there's one way to learn: a tap only ever moves you, and never pauses or likes (like with the heart).
Thin segments across the top show how many shots that person has in the set (their new ones when you're catching up) and which one you're on, and "2 / 5" says the same at the bottom right.
Clips
- A clip plays by itself, without sound, once. Its segment at the top fills as it plays (on a day of one shot, or more shots than the segments can show, one line across the top does it). At its end the viewer goes on to the next shot, as a tap would. Going back to a clip starts it again. With nothing after it, it plays again.
- A photo stays until you tap; only a clip goes on by itself, because it ends.
- Sound: the round button beside More, on a clip. Turning it on turns sound on for every clip from then on, until you turn it off; Durpin remembers it. Off, clips leave any music you're playing alone; on, a clip takes over like any video does.
- A clip stops while anything is over it (the comments, More, the vibes, a profile you opened from it) or Durpin is in the background, and plays on when you're back.
- With a screen reader on, a clip plays again instead of going on, so the shot doesn't change under you; its label says how long it is, and the sound button is a switch.
The photo and the words under it
Since build 17 nothing is drawn over a shot in the viewer but its own date stamp. The screen is three bands: the name and buttons at the top, the shot, and under it the note, the likes, a line that opens the comments, and the comment field, in plain text on the viewer's black.
- Every shot shows whole, a photo or a clip, wide or tall, never cropped, as large as its room allows, in the middle of it. A 3:4 photo is the full width on most phones; a 9:16 clip is a little narrower, with its stamp as big as a photo's; a wide photo has as much room above it as below.
- The same room on every page (build 18). The room between the top and the words is the same for every shot of every friend and every day, so the same shape of shot is the same size in the same place, and swiping from one friend to the next, nothing jumps.
- The words keep one place. The note, the likes and "View all 3 comments" start on the same line on every page, under the room, with space kept for the most a page can show; tapping that line opens the comments. The comment previews are on the feed, and in the viewer the likes take one line, so the photo gets the room.
- The top band fits its words. With large text the name and time grow a little less than the rest, and the shot starts under them, never under the name. On your own shot your name is followed by who has it (Shared, Private or the shared roll's name); the bar at the top shows where you are in the day.
- A note shows two lines, and when there's more the second ends at a word with "… more"; that opens the whole note in a sheet over the photo, dimmed; Close, a tap above the sheet or Back closes it.
- Short screens and large text (an iPhone SE, or the largest text sizes) get compact words: a note shows one line, and the comments wait in their sheet, so the shot keeps its width.
On a feed card a wide shot sits whole on the card's own color, with no blurred bands above and below, and the note is under the photo in full strength text at reading size, in light and dark (build 16). On an earlier day's card, under "You're all caught up", only the photos are dimmer; the note, the likes and the comments stay at full strength. Older days are their own cards in the feed, so the same friend can come up again for an earlier day. Near the end of the set, more of the feed loads, so a day that runs on into the next page is still whole.
With a screen reader, the photo has actions for the next and previous shot (which go on to the next or previous person at the ends, like a tap) and the next and previous person.
Opened from a profile, it works the same way with days instead of people: tap through the shots and on into the next day, or swipe for the day before or after, through that person's whole Journal (or your Private); see Your profile by week. From a shared roll or the Rewind card, taps go through that day and stop at its ends, and there's nothing to swipe to. In all of these, swipe down closes it.
